Asif Ibrahim The former chairman of Bangladesh Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Follow colleagues, ladies and gentlemen:

Good afternoon !

In order to participate in the conference, I have prepared a very long speech, but previous spokesman Vice president, Jagoe Moruda, has already made a detailed demonstration on what I am going to state.

We all work in the Bangladesh Buyer and Agent Association, and the data we got is basically the same, so i will skip over a lot of data, only to talk about some main points.

At first, I have been visiting throughout Kunming City, Yunnan province constantly since 2007. I remember that I also came to attend this conference in 2012 and at that time, the airport was very small, but, yesterday, when getting off the plane, I found a new airport, a new international Changshui Airport. I would like to express my congratulation to you on the completion of a very beautiful international airport and on the great achievement you have made on the construction of airport in Yunnan province.

Relatively speaking, Bangladesh is an emerging country and we didn’t achieved independence until 1971.When we achieved independence, Kissinger, and then US Secretary of state, once said that Bangladesh was at the bottom of a bag. I believe that, like what you have heard and seen, the reports about Bangladesh are often full of matters such as natural disasters, floods. But t I want to show you that he Bangladesh is also in a constant development.

Over the past 15 years, the average economic growth rate is above 6 %, which is only next to China, and Bangladesh is the world’s second largest exporter of clothing. We have a huge population dividend, 45 % of the population is under 30 years old and they are strong workforce. We have also gotten remarkable results. Such as on food processing, health and medicine and agricultural products processing, we have made a lot of achievements.

Just now, the professor gave a lot of positive remarks on the Bangladesh, China, India and Burma Economic Corridor in his speech and I fully agree with him. Like Bangladesh, a country with a relatively low rate of economic development, if it can rely on China’s economic growth rate and the other several countries, such as India and Burma, we are able to form a common region of development and develop a united economic growth body.

The total amount of China’s export to Bangladesh is about 11 billion. On the other side, what Bangladesh exports to China is less than 1 billion USD. Now, the main exporting countries are no longer the allies of Bangladesh, but the EU countries. Bangladesh hopes that China can be its largest importer after 10 years. In order to achieve this goal, we need a lot of market access opportunities. At the same time, in order to avoid such a huge trade deficit,

we need China to do a lot of investments in Bangladesh. I hope you still remember that the China’s efforts made on the infrastructure mentioned just now.

We need conduct a lot of infrastructure constructions to raise the economic growth rate from 6 % to 8 % in Bangladesh. Personally speaking, I think that you all believe that China’s participation is certainly the most important and China has already promised investment projects of 20 billion.

The topic we are discussing is to transfer the labor-intensive but hightech enterprises in China to Bangladesh. I believe that there will be such an opportunity. I want to make an addition that besides investment; we can also introduce a large number of enterprises into Bangladesh. For example, I am also an entrepreneur, having a joint venture in Shenzhen, and it has set up factories in Bangladesh. There are six technicians having introduced the advanced Chinese technology to factories in Bangladesh.

We need more new tries and new beginnings like this. We all know that Jiangsu is an important province of textile industry in China. We hope that there will be entrepreneurs of Jiangsu and other entrepreneurs in China can go to Bangladesh and carry out the production and manufacture of textile industry.

Chinese ambassador in Bangladesh also had a talk with the leaders of Bangladesh.

He is very young and active, with a lot of new ideas. We hope the talk can

bring more opportunities to more entrepreneurs.

There is one word called “Xiongdi” in China, that is, elder brother and younger brother. In the future, we hope that the investors from both China and Bangladesh can be the real brothers, and realize mutually benefits in these investment and business activities..
