南达·巴哈杜尔·普恩 尼泊尔副总统

Chairman of the China-South Asia Business Forum, H.E. Governor of Yunnan Province, H.E. President of SAARC Chamber of Commerce, H.E. President of CCPIT, High dignitaries and business leaders from friendly countries, Ladies and Gentlemen,I feel very proud to represent Nepal in this edition of the annual China South Business Forum being held in this beautiful and historic city of Kunming. This event, in which Nepal has participated since its very inception, brings South Asia and China even closer through economic, social and cultural means. This forum has also been playing an instrumental role in garnering trade and investment opportunities for mutual benefits of the involved parties.

Nepal is no stranger to this significant event and has supported this program with the high-level representation of various Ministries, organizations, media, business leaders and tourism entrepreneurs. Firstly, I would like to extend my gratitude to the Government of the People’s Republic of China, the Provincial People’s Government of Yunnan, CCPIT, SAARC and all the organizers of this auspicious event for your warm welcome and immaculate hospitality.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The 21st century is undoubtedly the century of Asian nations. This region has abundance of manpower, resources and not to mention the willpower, which all combine to form a powerful engine to propel development.

The South Asian subcontinent and China combine to have the lion’s share of the humanity. Asian countries, precisely China and countries in South Asia, have undertaken unprecedented developments in a comparatively short span of time. Even then, on a sadder note, some countries like ours have not been able to keep up with the pace of development of other countries in this region. The proportion of trade and investment amongst our nations is far too low compared to the global trade scenario. Today people in the world are in search of lasting peace, happiness, sustainable development. It is a prerequisite for peace, prosperity and sustainable development to make poverty history. However, these two sides — peace and poverty — cannot coexist. While development of a country was possible through individual effort in the past, in today’s age, a country’s progress can only be attainable and smooth if there is mutual support and understanding among neighboring nations and across the region. In this context, it is important and just to give special attention to the nations with slower pace of growth. In the same context, China has created a suitable platform for South Asian countries to work hand in hand for economic development. I believe that, our combined efforts and cooperation in bringing socio-economic changes in this region will certainly bear fruit. I therefore would like to commend highly this valuable initiative of China. However, it would be insufficient to consider that the main agenda of this forum is solely commercial activities. China and South Asian countries share a bond much more than just economic purposes, for instance, intellectual debates and exchange of experiences or best practices for the promotion of mutual wellbeing.  Last year, the world witnessed the revival of the ancient Silk Road and also the Maritime Silk Route through China’s visionary “One Belt, One Road” initiative.  This campaign has been gaining ground since its inception last year and I think it is very pertinent in the modern trade scenario because it opens up new opportunities and possibilities in the region. I believe that when this dream comes into complete materialization, it will bring significant reforms in sectors such as connectivity, people to people exchange, communications and collectively in economic development of the countries involved. For this noble cause, I would also like to stress that Nepal has supported and will be extending full support to this initiative of creating such a vibrant platform, and would also like to work together with China in its implementation in the future as well. I am confident that the Belt and Roads Initiative, which came into life through President His Excellency Xi Jinping’s farsighted vision, will definitely be successful and benefit not only the countries that lie in the ancient Silk Road and Maritime Silk Route, but also the entire region.

Yunnan Province, and more specifically the historic city of Kunming, is in an ideal and strategic geographical location for fostering regional development, social prosperity and to raise the overall living standard of the people of this region. I am confident that this initiative will continue in the future as well and we will continue to reap the benefits accrued through our mutual efforts.Similarly, I would like to mention that for the enhanced outcome of this lofty event in the future, Nepal, China and other friendly countries along with representatives of the SAARC Chamber of Commerce, must involve in more frequent and extensive interactions and discussions.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Lastly, I would like to touch upon the age-old Nepal-China relations. Our friendship had prevailed since time immemorial, the diplomatic relations were established in 1955. In recent times, our relationship has even scaled greater heights through our cooperation in multiple fields including socioeconomic development, people to people contact and cultural exchange.

We are grateful to China and the people of China for the immediate response to the last year’s devastating earthquake. We received invaluable support in rescue and relief efforts, and the generous commitment to reconstruction after the disaster. China has remained a development partner of Nepal through economic and technical assistance in various sectors. These are a testament to our longlasting friendship.

Nepal and China enjoy the friendship characterized by strong bond of fraternity.Nepal wishes to have our relations to reach a new height. There is a need for our two countries to continue to work together with renewed energies. Nepal’s Prime Minister’s visit to China in last March was a milestone in our bilateral relations. During the visit, our two countries sealed the long awaited transit agreement. I am hopeful for the effective implementation of the agreement. I would also like to state that the Government of Nepal are expecting a visit of the Chinese Head of the State to Nepal and the people of Nepal are very eager to welcome them.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

As you are aware the people of Nepal had aspiration to promulgate their Constitution through the Constituent Assembly elected by the people themselves. Eight months ago, this dream has come true. I am proud to mention that Nepal’s Constitution is among the best in the world that ensure the representation of all ethnic communities, languages, religions, geographical regions in all state bodies. In the process of making the Nepalese people sovereign we have received support from the international community including China. I would like to thank them whole-heartedly on this occasion. The transition of Nepal has ended with the promulgation of the Constitution. Now each Nepali citizen is marching ahead in the process of nation building and socioeconomic transformation. I would like to emphasise that the sole effort of a nation is not enough. We would like to work hand-in-hand with the friendly countries in Asia including China. In this context, I would like to mention that for the common harnessing of immense potentials in energy and infrastructure sectors, Nepal, China and India can work together for common interest. I would like to request all the delegates and representatives present here that Nepal is awaiting large-scale investments. With the end of peace process, Nepal has achieved stability and an investment friendly environment has been created in the country. I invite you all to come to Nepal and explore opportunities in attractive investment sectors such as infrastructure, energy, tourism and agriculture. Finally, I wish all success of this great event. I also wish for the continuity of the event for bolstering cooperation amongst countries in this region. I would like to thank once again to the organizers of this Forum for the warm hospitality and would like to wish everyone present here today great success in their future endevours. Thank you.
